| Course | Study route | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor of Arts | Class 12 route | BA is a family of programmes, not one fixed syllabus. JMI general BA and Alagappa Tamil BA are different study choices. |
| Master of Arts in English | Previous-degree / progression route | Compare the prescribed reading list, language level and prior-subject requirements. Build a writing sample portfolio alongside the degree. |
| Master of Arts in Sanskrit | Previous-degree / progression route | The UGC historical JNU listing is Sanskrit-specific. Confirm current admission availability and prior language study requirements. |
| Shastri | Class 12 route | Choose the named Sanskrit branch carefully. Subject pathways in the historical UGC list include grammar, literature and astrology. |
| Acharya | Previous-degree / progression route | This is an advanced Sanskrit route. Check the qualifying Sanskrit credential and the exact branch before applying. |
Choose by the work, not only the degree name
The following examples help you distinguish the routes in arts & languages. These are suggested trial tasks, not prescribed university assignments. Read the exact official curriculum after choosing the kind of work you want to learn.
BA: compare the learning demands
BA needs a subject decision before a university decision. A language-focused BA, a general humanities BA and a social-science combination can require very different reading and assessment. Choose the subjects you want to study for several years, then check the exact title and language in the official programme document.
Select a public speech, historical document or short story relevant to your intended subject. Write a 600-word interpretation using three short references, identify a competing interpretation and explain why your reading is convincing. This exercise tests sustained reading and argument rather than recall alone.
Alternative to investigate: Compare BAJMC when reporting, audio/video production and a media portfolio are your main interests. Read the BAJMC guide.
MA English: compare the learning demands
MA English needs comfort with sustained reading and interpretive writing. Enjoying spoken English is different from studying a demanding literary text. Ask for the prescribed reading list and a sample assignment so you can judge the language level before enrolling.
Read one short literary work and two contrasting critical discussions. Write a 1,000-word argument that cites passages and responds to an alternative interpretation. Revise one paragraph after checking whether the evidence really supports the claim.
Alternative to investigate: Compare MAJMC for reporting and practical communication production rather than primarily literary analysis. Read the MAJMC guide.
MA Sanskrit: compare the learning demands
MA Sanskrit requires a language-level decision before a fee decision. Ask for a reading sample and the prior Sanskrit qualification required. The JNU entry represented in this directory is Sanskrit-specific; it should not be treated as evidence of a general online MA catalogue.
Choose a suitable Sanskrit passage, parse key grammatical forms and prepare an annotated translation. Explain one interpretive choice and compare it with another possible reading. Use a text appropriate to your current language level.
Alternative to investigate: Compare Acharya by its named branch and qualifying Sanskrit credential, rather than assuming the titles are interchangeable. Read the Acharya guide.
Shastri: compare the learning demands
Shastri applicants need to identify the named Sanskrit branch and entry qualification. The historical catalogue can distinguish grammar, literature and other subject pathways. A broad label on a comparison page should never replace the precise title on the recognition record.
Select a short text appropriate to the intended branch. Prepare a reading, a grammatical explanation and a brief commentary. Keep a list of the forms or concepts you cannot yet explain, then use it as a preparation plan.
Alternative to investigate: Compare a subject-specific BA when your intended language or humanities combination differs from the Shastri branch. Read the BA guide.
Acharya: compare the learning demands
Acharya is an advanced Sanskrit route where the qualifying credential and named branch need careful checking. A general graduation statement may leave out the essential Sanskrit background. Request the written rule for your specific prior qualification.
Prepare a comparative commentary on two interpretations of a text relevant to your intended branch. State the textual evidence, explain a technical term and identify a question needing further research. Choose material suitable for supervised academic study.
Alternative to investigate: Compare MA Sanskrit when its exact subject and entry rule fit your preparation more closely. Read the MA Sanskrit guide.
Before paying, request a sample assignment and a marking rubric for your selected route. For a student staying at home, this reveals whether the actual work depends on coding equipment, production tools, extensive reading or a supervised local placement.
