Start with the degree fee
Record whether the quoted price is per semester, per year or for the full programme. Multiply only when the university publishes the corresponding duration. For an honours extension, record the additional year and its separate total rather than assuming it is included in the three-year degree.
For comparison, our profile may show total divided by duration as an annual average. That is an arithmetic aid, not the amount the university will invoice each year. Always use the official payment schedule when planning cash flow.
Add charges that brochures can separate
Check registration, admission processing, examination, re-examination, project, convocation and certificate dispatch. Some charges may be included; others may be optional or conditional. Do not invent a fee for an item the university has not published. Mark it being verified and ask for a written answer.
The LPU online BBA/BCA fee note illustrates why inclusions matter: the applicable semester amount includes an examination fee but excludes the initial registration fee. Treating the registration as included would understate the known payable amount.
Make household assumptions explicit
If studying from home, tuition is only one component. Budget the device you actually need, additional internet, electricity backup if necessary and optional travel. These values are your estimates, not published city averages. Enter them in the calculator so they remain visible.
Living at home does not make every cost zero, but it can make hostel and mess irrelevant. If relocating for personal reasons, enter your own rent and food quote. Do not add both mess and the same food budget twice. A separate monthly line for “other living” should exclude items already entered elsewhere.
Worked example with chosen inputs
This is an illustrative budget, not a university quote: tuition ₹1,00,000 for three years, one-time equipment ₹20,000, other charges ₹5,000, and incremental monthly study costs ₹1,000. Thirty-six months of monthly cost adds ₹36,000. The scenario total is ₹1,61,000.
Change the monthly cost to ₹1,500 and the same scenario rises by ₹18,000 over the degree. That sensitivity can matter more than a small headline discount. Use the calculator to compare a low, expected and high household scenario.
Plan the payment dates as well as the total
A family can afford the total and still struggle with a large payment due before income arrives. Put university payment dates beside household salary or business-income dates. If using a loan, compare repayment, moratorium and financed interest separately from tuition.
Keep scholarship savings as a separate confirmed adjustment. Do not subtract an advertised maximum without an award letter. A “no-cost EMI” can have conditions, processing charges or lost upfront discounts; collect the lender’s schedule and university fee quote before treating it as free financing.
A complete hypothetical home-study budget
Consider a fictional three-year course with ₹1,20,000 tuition, a ₹30,000 device purchase, ₹600 a month of additional internet and ₹6,000 of planned travel across the whole degree. The arithmetic is ₹1,20,000 + ₹30,000 + (₹600 × 36) + ₹6,000 = ₹1,77,600. No hostel or mess amount is added because this example assumes the student stays at home. These figures are illustrative inputs, not a university quote or a city average.
Add registration, exam, project or repeat-attempt charges only after checking which items the university includes. An unknown charge should remain visible as an unresolved budget item. If the family would pay for the same internet connection without the degree, decide whether to count only the extra spend; write down that choice. A shared household bill and a cost caused by study are different budgeting perspectives, and silently switching between them makes two totals difficult to compare.
Separate total cost from the payment calendar
The full-course budget shows the economic amount you plan to spend. A payment calendar shows when cash must be available. Copy the actual semester or annual due dates from the institution’s quote. Add a device purchase before classes if it is required, travel near the relevant assessment, and recurring household costs in the months they occur. An arithmetic monthly average is useful for saving, but it is not the university’s instalment schedule.
If you are comparing a loan, keep the tuition budget and loan repayment model separate. A loan may pay part of tuition while interest and lender charges create additional spending. Do not count the borrowed principal twice by adding both the financed tuition and all principal repayments to the same economic-cost total. For cash-flow planning, show the loan disbursement and instalments explicitly. Ask the lender which charges are financed, paid upfront or due later.
A stress test the family can actually use
Run one scenario with the confirmed scholarship and one without it. Run another where a device needs replacement or an exam must be repeated, using actual known tariffs or clearly chosen assumptions. The point is to see which event would stretch the budget, not to predict that it will happen. Keep guaranteed discounts separate from applications still under review.
Finish with a short unresolved-items list: refund deductions, extra exam fee, specialisation charges, software access or compulsory travel. Request those answers before choosing between close totals. In the calculator, a zero should mean the family expects no cost under the stated arrangement; it should not mean the amount was forgotten or could not be verified. Save the inputs and the dated quotes so another family member can reproduce the calculation without interpreting an advertisement.
Use this comparison checklist
| Cost line | Published or estimated? | Avoid this mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | University document | Using monthly EMI as total |
| Registration / exams | University document | Counting included fees twice |
| Equipment | Your purchase estimate | Assuming a phone meets exam requirements |
| Living / internet | Your household estimate | Using unsupported city averages |
Your next steps
- Convert university charges to one full-course total.
- List excluded or unknown charges.
- Enter household costs as explicit assumptions.
- Compare three scenarios and payment timing.
Questions families ask
Does the calculator fetch city living costs?
No. It uses the amounts you enter. No unverified city average is supplied.
Is the yearly comparison an invoice?
No. Total divided by years is labelled an annual average; consult the payment schedule for instalments.
