Use the right name and mode
Universities sometimes use an online brand different from their legal awarding name. Start with the name that will appear on the degree and admission letter. If a platform offers degrees from several universities, each awarding university needs its own check. MUJ, MAHE and SMU are separate institutions even though they share an online platform.
UGC-DEB distinguishes online and open-and-distance learning. A web-based application form does not make a degree an online programme. If the listing says ODL, read its learning-centre, practical and exam arrangements separately. Do not relabel that entry as OL.
Match the admission session
Recognition evidence has a time scope. Our directory labels 2025–26 entries as historical where that is the verified list. For a later intake, use the relevant session on the official portal and check any new notice or restriction. A prior entry proves what was listed then; it does not answer every current admission question.
Check the programme title down to the subject or specialisation where the listing distinguishes them. BBA, BBA Finance and Accounts, and a bundled degree pathway may have different records. Ask for the exact row or official letter if the sales page uses a different title.
Understand the different badges
NIRF ranks institutions within categories and years. NAAC accreditation evaluates an institution over an accreditation cycle. Neither should be substituted for the online programme and session entry. The approval checker shows these as separate fields so that a missing programme check remains visible.
Regulator checks depend on the programme. Professional practice fields can have additional council requirements and restrictions. Never infer a fully online medical, law or other regulated professional qualification from a general university recognition badge. Ask the relevant regulator about the specific qualification.
Create the required student identifiers carefully
The UGC-DEB student FAQ explains creation of a DEB-ID using an ABC-ID. Follow the official portal and keep the identifiers available for the university admission process. Enter names and identity details consistently to reduce mismatches later.
Do not share passwords, OTPs or full identity documents with unofficial agents just to check eligibility. This portal’s counselling form asks for contact and course information, not identity credentials or documents. Submit university verification documents only through the official process you have confirmed.
Keep an evidence folder
Save the listing, dated prospectus, complete fee quote, admission letter, receipts and written answers about exam mode. Record when each document was checked. If the university updates a page later, your stored document helps explain what you relied on at admission.
When evidence conflicts, pause payment and ask a precise question: “Which online-mode entry applies to this programme for my admission session?” Keep the reply with the official notice. Our data methodology prefers an explicit unknown over filling the gap with a plausible claim.
A six-field matching exercise
Create a record with six fields: legal awarding institution, exact degree title, subject or specialisation, delivery mode, academic year and admission session. Copy the institution name from the official document rather than shortening it to the online marketing brand. If an MA entry specifies Sanskrit, do not use it as evidence for English or a general MA. If a record says distance or ODL, do not label it online without the relevant online entry.
Use the same six fields on the application page and the recognition record. Highlight every difference and ask the institution to explain it in writing. Differences can be harmless naming conventions, separate awards or a genuine mismatch; the site does not decide by similarity alone. Save the dated listing, the programme page and the reply together. This is especially useful when a family is comparing several universities with similar names or a platform offers programmes from more than one awarding institution.
What a partial verification result means
Imagine a fictional University X has a verified online BBA entry for one session, while its website also advertises an MBA. The BBA result does not establish the MBA’s current entitlement. Likewise, a verified general degree entry does not settle every specialised variant displayed alongside it. The correct result for the unverified combination is an unanswered check, not a positive approval badge carried across the entire university.
This portal separates exact current-session records from historical catalogue coverage. A historical listing is useful because it documents what was recorded then; it cannot answer a later intake question by itself. When the approval checker shows only a subset, inspect the titles and session in that subset. Do not read a count of verified records as the total number of programmes a university is allowed to offer. It describes the evidence this site has actually checked.
A short message to request clarification
Ask the institution: “Please confirm the legal awarding name, exact degree title and mode for my intended intake, and share the matching official programme/session entry. Please also explain whether the advertised specialisation is part of that award or a separate certificate.” Add the course URL and the session you plan to join. A specific question is easier to answer than “Is the university approved?”
If the reply provides a homepage or an institutional ranking, repeat the request for the exact record. If the reply provides an older session, ask for the intended session. Keep the exchange with the fee quote before paying. Recognition, student eligibility and the university’s admission confirmation are separate documents; completing one check does not remove the other two. Use a source link as the start of verification, not as a substitute for matching the record.
Use this comparison checklist
| Check | What it answers | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| UGC-DEB programme + session | Online recognition / entitlement record | A placement guarantee |
| NAAC cycle | Institutional accreditation | Approval of every online subject |
| NIRF category + year | Institutional comparison | Your online cohort’s salary |
| University admission rule | Whether you may apply | Guaranteed selection |
Your next steps
- Identify the legal awarding university.
- Select online mode and the correct session on UGC-DEB.
- Match the degree title and retain the entry.
- Create student identifiers only on official portals.
Questions families ask
Is one old approval letter enough?
Use the entry relevant to your admission session and check current notices. Old evidence must remain labelled historical.
What if the portal is unavailable?
Keep the status being verified and request the exact official notice from the university. A sales claim alone is not a substitute.
