Ask whose outcomes are being reported
A university can publish a campus placement report while its online department offers placement assistance. These are different claims. Ask for the programme, graduating year, cohort size, number seeking placement and number placed. Without these denominators, a headline number is difficult to interpret.
Highest package is an extreme observation, not the salary a new student should budget around. A median or average also needs a clear cohort definition and reporting method. Our profiles leave online placement numbers unverified where no suitable official report was checked.
Distinguish services from results
Resume sessions, mock interviews, job portals and employer events are services. They may be valuable, but a list of services does not establish the probability of an offer or its pay. Compare what each learner can actually access and whether any service carries an extra charge.
Request a sample career-support calendar and the process for accessing opportunities. Ask whether a job listing is open to online learners and whether it requires location or experience the student does not have. This produces a more useful comparison than counting company logos.
Use ROI as a scenario, not a forecast
Our calculator accepts a total cost, expected annual gross salary and the share of salary available for recovery. Simple gross-income recovery is cost divided by salary; savings-based payback is cost divided by salary times the chosen savings share. The latter often better reflects a household’s question.
The tool does not predict a starting salary. You enter one and see the effect. Taxes, employment gaps, living costs, salary growth and future borrowing are not automatically modelled. Label each assumption when discussing results with a parent.
Worked example using assumed values
Take an illustrative total cost of ₹1,80,000 and an assumed annual gross salary of ₹3,60,000. Gross-income recovery is 0.5 years. If only 20% of that salary is available to recover the cost, annual recovery is ₹72,000 and savings-based payback is 2.5 years. These figures describe the inputs, not a promised university outcome.
If the student already works, salary uplift is usually a more relevant comparison than total salary. For example, compare the cost with an assumed additional ₹60,000 a year rather than attributing all existing income to the new degree. The calculator provides that alternative.
Check a downside before committing
Run a lower salary or uplift, a smaller savings share and a period with no new earnings. Include loan interest in total cost if you want to evaluate financed cost. If the decision only works under the most optimistic assumptions, reconsider the fee or financing plan.
The degree can have educational value beyond immediate payback, but the family should decide how much it can spend for that value. Separate learning goals from the income assumptions instead of using a placement claim to justify an unaffordable expense.
Decode a placement claim using its denominator
Imagine a fictional graduating group of 500 online students. If 100 sought placement through the university service and 60 received an offer, a statement of “60% of placement-seeking students placed” uses 100 as its denominator. The same 60 people are 12% of the entire graduating group. Neither calculation should be substituted for the other without explaining the population. These numbers are invented to illustrate evidence questions, not results of a listed university.
Ask what counts as a placement: a new job, an internship, a promotion, multiple offers to the same student or a self-reported change. Ask whether the figure describes an online programme or the whole institution. Request the cohort year, programme, participant count and published methodology. A highest package says little about the typical student; a recruiter logo says little about how many offers were made. Keep career-service availability separate from an employment outcome.
Use incremental earnings when already employed
Assume a fictional total study cost of ₹2,40,000 and a starting salary assumption of ₹3,60,000 a year. Dividing cost by annual gross salary gives 0.67 years, but this is not a household payback estimate: taxes, living costs, job-search time and the salary that might have been earned without the degree are omitted. The site’s simple gross-income comparison must be read with its stated assumptions.
For an employed learner, consider a separate illustrative salary increase of ₹60,000 a year attributable to the intended change. Cost ÷ incremental gross income becomes four years before other adjustments. Attribution itself is an assumption; experience or a job switch can affect earnings. Run a no-increase scenario and a delayed-change scenario as well. Avoid calling a degree financially recovered merely because total salary exceeds tuition when the learner was already earning most of that salary.
Translate career services into questions about access
Ask when an online student becomes eligible for the service, whether participation requires additional assessments, and which activities are actually delivered: CV review, interview practice, job-board access, employer events or a supervised project. Request any separate charge and the process for booking support. These details are more useful than treating “placement assistance” as a guaranteed offer.
Choose two role directions and identify the evidence you can build during study. A BCA learner might demonstrate a working application and a test log; a BCom learner might show a sourced financial analysis; a media learner might show verified stories and revised edits. Check whether the university gives feedback on that work. A defensible ROI scenario combines a transparent budget with a skill-building plan and explicit earnings assumptions, rather than an unsupported package headline.
Use this comparison checklist
| Claim | Evidence needed | Budget treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Highest package | Programme / cohort / year | Do not use as expected salary |
| Placement percentage | Seeking and placed counts | Use only comparable official cohort data |
| Placement assistance | Actual service list and access | Service, not income guarantee |
| Expected salary | Your explicit scenario | Editable assumption |
Your next steps
- Ask for online-cohort data and denominators.
- List the actual career-support services.
- Run gross, savings and uplift payback separately.
- Compare an optimistic and a downside scenario.
Questions families ask
Why are salary ranges missing?
No suitable officially published online-cohort starting salary range is verified in this dataset. We do not manufacture one.
Is a short payback guaranteed?
No. It is arithmetic using your assumptions, not a prediction of employment.
