An online degree after Class 12: a family decision checklist

Choose the subject first, check the exact online programme and session next, and then compare the full cost. A familiar university name alone is not enough.

Start with the work you want to try

Before listing universities, write down three tasks the student actually enjoys: solving a spreadsheet problem, building a small website, writing a news report, organising a school event, or reading history. These tasks make the BBA, BCA, BCom and BA comparison concrete. A stream label such as commerce does not by itself settle which degree will suit the student.

Ask the student to try one small task in each shortlisted field over a weekend. For BCA, follow a beginner programming exercise and change it. For BCom, make a monthly budget and explain its entries. For BBA, interview a local shopkeeper about stock and customers. For media, write a 300-word report with two independently checked facts. Keep the work; it gives the family something better than a course advertisement to discuss.

Check whether studying at home will work

Online study shifts some responsibility to the student and household. Identify a quiet place, a device suitable for assignments, reliable internet and a backup plan for power or connectivity during an exam. A phone may be useful for lectures but unsuitable for a proctored exam or coding project. Ask for the university’s actual device requirements.

Agree on a weekly timetable before admission. Protect study periods in the same way the family would protect a campus timetable. Include time for recorded lectures, assignments, reading and practical work. The number of live classes advertised is not the student’s total workload.

Separate eligibility from recognition

Eligibility asks whether this student may enter this course. Recognition asks whether this university may offer this programme in this mode for the chosen admission session. Both checks are required. A 2025–26 online entitlement entry is historical evidence and should not be presented as automatic permission for a 2026–27 intake.

Use the university’s legal name, not only its online brand. Match that name, the exact degree title and the online mode on the UGC-DEB portal. Save the applicable listing and fee document with your admission records. If a subject or programme cannot be found, ask the university for the relevant official entry before paying.

Compare a degree, not a monthly instalment

An EMI headline answers a cash-flow question, not the total-cost question. Record tuition for the whole degree, registration, examination charges, required software, a laptop if needed and optional campus visits. Check which charges are included and which are separate. Do not count a scholarship until the university confirms your eligibility and amount in writing.

Use our Total Cost Calculator with your family’s own inputs. If staying at home, hostel and mess can be zero while internet and household contributions remain separate choices. Do not add a campus hostel estimate to an online programme unless the student really plans to move.

Create a shortlist you can explain

Keep three candidates: one that meets the subject and budget priorities, one alternative with different academic support, and one public-university option where a suitable online programme is documented. “Safe” should mean affordable and administratively verified here, not a promised admission based on a rank.

Ask each university the same written questions: exact award title, current-session online entry, full fee, examination mode, teaching language, refund policy and the person handling student queries. A complete answer is more useful than a verbal assurance. Use the comparison page to record the differences, then discuss which difference matters most to your family.

A practical weekend test before choosing a course

Give the student two small tasks rather than asking only which degree sounds attractive. For a business route, prepare a stock sheet for a fictional shop: opening units, purchases, sales and closing units. For computing, build a basic expense tracker and fix an invalid input. For commerce, record ten invented transactions and reconcile the cash balance. These are editorial practice exercises, not admission tests. The useful question is which difficulty the student willingly returns to after getting stuck.

Ask for a five-minute explanation of the work. A student who enjoys a business presentation but avoids every number may need preparation for quantitative papers. A student who enjoys watching technology videos but dislikes debugging may want to inspect a BCA assignment before committing. Keep the task, the mistakes and the revised version. Compare those observations with the compulsory papers in two official curricula; a course-finder score can support this conversation but should not decide it alone.

Two hypothetical offers: compare the missing items

Imagine University A quotes a fictional full-course tuition of ₹1,20,000 and University B quotes ₹1,50,000. A lists its exam charges separately; B says its quoted amount includes them. The ₹30,000 headline difference is only a starting point. Record the actual mandatory extras, exam arrangement, project supervision and repeat-attempt charges before calling either option cheaper. These amounts are invented to explain comparison and are not fees of any university in this directory.

If the student also needs a fictional ₹30,000 laptop and ₹600 a month of additional internet for 36 months, those shared costs total ₹51,600. Add them to both tuition scenarios: A starts at ₹1,71,600 before its unverified extras, while B starts at ₹2,01,600 before any other exclusions. Shared costs do not disappear because tuition is advertised as an EMI. Replace every assumption with the household’s own quote and the university’s written inclusion list.

When to pause a paid application

Pause when the degree title on the payment page differs from the one you checked, when the current session cannot be matched, or when a promised concession has no written conditions. Ask for the relevant document instead of treating a familiar logo as an answer. A university may have a genuine catalogue but still need to confirm the exact variant and application window you intend to join.

Before payment, the student should be able to explain the course choice and the parent should be able to explain the complete budget. Both should know where assessments will happen and whom to contact about a problem. If one of these answers is missing, record it as an unanswered question rather than filling it with an assumption. This makes the final decision a short, evidence-based conversation instead of a rushed response to an offer countdown.

Your next steps

  1. Choose two degree subjects and try a sample task in each.
  2. Check the exact online programme and session.
  3. Collect a written full-fee quote from three universities.
  4. Compare support and assessment before submitting the university application.

Questions families ask

Can arts students consider BBA?

Some published BBA rules allow any Class 12 stream. Use the programme-specific eligibility checker; no universal threshold is assumed.

Is an online degree an easier degree?

Flexible location does not remove assessment or academic requirements. Read assignment and examination rules before deciding.
